RESTORATIVE TREATMENT

**Restorative treatment** refers to dental procedures aimed at addressing issues such as tooth decay, fractures, or severe wear. In restorative dentistry, the goal is not only to repair the tooth in a healthy way but also to achieve an aesthetically pleasing result. These treatments hold a significant place in modern dentistry. Through methods such as fillings, crowns, inlays, and onlays, teeth are both functionally strengthened and restored to a natural appearance.

Amalgam Fillings and Their History

Amalgam fillings are among the oldest materials used in dental treatments. Amalgam is a filling material composed of metals such as silver, mercury, tin, and copper. In earlier times, it was widely used due to its durability and long lifespan.

However, concerns have arisen over the mercury content in amalgam. In reality, after mercury reacts with silver and hardens, it no longer releases harmful vapors. Therefore, amalgam fillings containing mercury are not as dangerous as commonly believed. Nevertheless, due to aesthetic concerns and advancing technology, amalgam is now used less frequently in modern dental practices.

The Rise of Composite Fillings

In recent years, composite fillings have largely replaced amalgam. These fillings offer superior aesthetic qualities and adhere better to the tooth structure, resulting in stronger restorations. Their ability to match the natural color of the teeth makes them highly desirable for aesthetic purposes.

Composite fillings are hardened with halogen light and chemically bond to the tooth. This helps preserve the natural tooth structure and ensures a harmonious fit between the filling and the tooth. Composite materials are not only visually pleasing but also offer excellent functionality.

Unlike metal fillings, composites transmit chewing force more effectively and fit naturally into the tooth structure. Furthermore, they do not cause discoloration after placement, offering a long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Glass Ionomer Fillings: The Ideal Choice for Children

Glass ionomer fillings are non-toxic materials commonly used in pediatric dentistry. They bond well to the tooth and do not damage the enamel. Another reason why they are preferred in pediatric dental treatments is their ability to release fluoride, which helps protect the tooth.

This feature provides a significant advantage for newly erupted teeth and children's teeth. Although glass ionomers are less aesthetically appealing than composite fillings, they offer a safe and healthy treatment option.

The Role and Importance of Restorative Treatment Today

Today, restorative treatments not only restore the function of teeth but also enhance their appearance. With the advancement of technology, materials used for fillings have become more durable, more aesthetic, and healthier.

Aesthetic restorations blend seamlessly with the natural tooth structure and are indistinguishable from the patient's own teeth. Restorative dentistry provides both aesthetic and functional satisfaction, helping individuals maintain optimal oral health.

Materials such as composite and glass ionomer ensure that teeth remain both healthy and attractive. At every stage of dental treatment, long-lasting and effective results can be achieved by using the right materials and appropriate treatment methods.

In Which Situations Is Restorative Treatment Applied?

Restorative treatment is preferred in the following cases:

  1. In cases of material loss caused by tooth decay
  2. For fractured or cracked teeth
  3. To repair worn tooth surfaces
  4. To replace old and non-functional fillings
  5. To address aesthetic concerns (such as shape irregularities or color mismatch)
  6. When a tooth is damaged due to trauma
  7. To reduce and manage tooth sensitivity
  8. To fill gaps in the teeth and restore proper bite function
